Introduction and Overview

Welcome to my class about biomedical animation with Cinema 4D. I'm so happy you're here!

To get started, watch the video introduction below.

Notes from the introduction video

I have been working professionally as a biomedical animator and illustrator since 2002, and I'm excited to share what I've learned during that time with you now. Biomedical animation can be an incredibly rewarding and lucrative career, but it takes knowledge and effort to be prepared for it. Whether you're working as a freelance artist or as an employee of a medical animation company, the process and workflow are going to be similar. This class is designed to provide a glimpse into what it is like to work as a professional medical animator. To do this, we'll create a small piece of a larger patient education video project together.

For this class, I ask you to imagine that you've been hired to create a biomedical animation and have been supplied with a storyboard by an art director. You'll also have a pre-recorded voice track, music, a mood board, and style frames. We'll create everything else together, from initial model generation to animation, special effects, editing, and final output for the client.

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of creating the animation, I'd like to go over a few key points.

What this class IS:

A class designed to teach you what it is like to work as a biomedical animator in a realistic scenario - we will create and animation together real-time step-by-step. A place to expand your skills and knowledge about biomedical animation based on real-world practice. A place to strengthen your Cinema 4D skills for creating biomedical content. A community of people learning together.

What this class is NOT:

This class is not intended to be a replacement for a degree in medical illustration or biomedical animation. Medical knowledge and training are an integral part of a successful practice/career as a biomedical animator. If you'd like to learn more about degree programs in medical illustration or medical animation, you can start by checking out my blog posts about this on my website.

Who this class is for:

Anyone who wants to learn what it's like to be a medical animator working in Cinema 4D. Maybe you're a medical illustrator who wants to do more 3D animation work. Maybe you're a scientist who wants to learn to animate. Maybe you're an animator who wants to get a job at a medical animation firm, and you want to get a feel for what it's like.

What You'll need:

  • A Maxon Cinema 4D or Maxon One license.
  • An Adobe Creative Cloud or similar license that includes Adobe Premiere.
  • A good-quality computer to run 3D software.
    • A PC Computer with a high-quality graphics card, preferably Nvidia RTX 3070 or newer
    • Or an Apple computer with an M1 processor or newer.
      • If you have an older computer, you can still follow along with the animation components, but rendering may be more challenging or slower.

What you'll learn:

  • how to create smooth, accurate, precisely-timed animations
  • how to work from a storyboard and script
  • how to create an animatic from storyboard frames
  • how to create models designed to animate easily for the purpose at hand
  • how to create aesthetically pleasing visuals using contemporary visualization techniques and software tools
  • how to sync and edit audio and video information
  • where to find resources for audio overlays and sound effects
  • how to use the animation tools in Cinema 4d to create compelling biomedical animations
  • how to use special FX tools in cinema 4d
  • how to optimize your render settings for faster output with Redshift
  • how to composite and edit your footage and audio into a finished scene

What is provided:

  • Reference Materials
  • Storyboard
  • Script
  • Shot list
  • Voice Over
  • Music
  • Mood Board
  • Style Frames

How the course is structured:

The course is structured according to The Three Stages of Video Production, which you'll learn more about in the next section. Each section of the course is accompanied by one or more videos where I walk you through every step of the process along the way. I'll also supply you with links, presentations, and helpful documents and resources that you'll need to be successful.
